Tuber excavatum Vitt. Fruit body subglobose, lobed, normally about the size of a walnut 1.5-5cm across, reddish-olive in colour, the flesh is browny-ochre, slightly nauseas scent. Asci 85-125 x 70-90um like a lumpy paper bag, spores normally 2-4 per asci, reticulate 22-55 x 16-40um. Habitat in broad leaved woodland, most of the year but mainly autumn. Distribution Europe and possibly California. Not edible.
